CMS STUDENT SERVICES SUB-COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS

VIRTUAL LIBRARY:

Each institution’s starter template should highlight system wide and campus resources that are already included and do not require any action from the course developer.  The highlighted resources would include the many assets available through the Virtual Library.

There will be a need to figure out proxy log-ins for RODP and Campus log-ins for Virtual Library use.  Easy Proxy is what is primarily currently in use-17 TBR campuses use Easy Proxy.

Librarians need to be included in the D2L training for course development to create library tutorials that are both stand alone and that can be embedded in courses.

Librarians should be enabled to team-teach and/or be embedded in courses to encourage greater use of the Virtual Library by faculty and students.

Additional Comments (Peter Nerzak):

Here are issues we discussed.  Yesterday’s discussion consisted mainly of broad outlines.  In this email today I am adding additional considerations and details and recommendations for including librarians in other subcommittees as appropriate.  These are also issues you may find appropriate as part of your campus implementation strategies.

  1. Enable Proxy Logins. How will students access library resources within D2L?  Will students be able to login once into their course and also be logged in via their campus proxy server? How will RODP students login in to Library resources? Would it be possible to include Virtual Library online database pages held in common by all libraries within the D2L server to enable single sign on for users?  Would it be possible to associate RODP instructors with their campus proxy so that when students login to their course they are authenticated for the common dbs and the instructor’s library’s resources? Other?

This is also an IT issue as it could impact username conventions, proxy server and firewall settings.  The more transparent login to resources is the more students will find and use online resources successfully.  Should Librarian(s) be included in IT     Subcommittees?

  1. Include Librarians in D2L training to create independent D2L courses consisting of tutorials and orientations; and to also develop tutorials, and pathfinders that can be embedded in courses to assist faculty and students in course specific activities and research.

This is also a D2L Train the Trainer issue and perhaps a Course Conversion issue if TBR libraries have tutorials or other instruction sets already developed within WebCT.  Should Librarians be included in Train the Trainer and Course Conversion Subcommittees?

  1. Determine methods for including Librarians in courses: TAs, Team Teaching, Co-designer, Project specific and / or Time specific

This is also a D2L Admin setup issue.  Should Librarians be included in D2L Admin training, not so much as learning about the day to day activities, but more so to be able to learn about the variety of options to include Librarians and library related resources in D2L instruction.

D2L TUTORIALS:

The sub-committee had minimal knowledge of the existent D2L tutorials; a recommendation was made that if the tutorials do not exist in video form, then videos need to be created.

Tutorials should be placed in many prominent places for student access including the home page.

A D2L orientation/tutorial course should be created which will allow faculty to confirm student’s access and successful completion of the tutorial.  This course should be available both as a stand alone perhaps for placement in the Virtual Student Center as well as to be placed within courses.

ADA:

The migration time frame to D2L should be viewed as an opportunity to raise awareness of ADA issues.

TBR should create consistent and specific system wide Board policy on ADA access.

ADA awareness needs to be incorporated into all D2L training and course development.

Todd Blankenbeckler of SWTCC has pledged to keep the Wiki board for the CMS migration updated with crucial ADA issues.

An exemplar of an ADA compliant course in D2L needs to be made available for faculty review as soon as possible.  This would increase the comfort level of the faculty regarding compliance.

Virtual Student Center:

The committee recommended that the Virtual Student Center serve as one of the locations for a D2L tutorial.

It was recommended that the Virtual Student Center serve as a “meeting place” for all RODP students.  Students should be encouraged to use D2L features such as creating their own web pages and blogs to communicate with each other, create social networks, and foster a community of online learners.

Proctoring:

The committee recommended that a consistent, system wide policy on RODP proctoring procedures be created by Board policy.

Additional Notes:

Members of the committee knowledgeable about D2L functions pointed out that the system has the capability of setting up specific reminders to RODP students which would be delivered at pre-determined times to their e-mail inboxes.  Reminders could include such items as scheduling the location of a proctored exam and dates that specific assignments are due.  The committee recommends exploration of these functions as to their possible use to the utmost by Campus Contacts in corresponding with students.

I have created a Del.icio.us account (tblankenbeckler) where I have begun tagging resources related to Web Accessibility/ADA. I have asked that the this account be added to the TBReLearning account's network so that these tagges sites can be accessed through the tag cloud on the wiki homepage. This list will continue to grow as I add more resources. If you have a site you would like added and do not have an account of your own, please send me the site information at tblankenbeck@southwest.tn.edu and I will add it to the set.
