B.     Identification of Campus Needs, Issues, and Challenges

  • Communication Plan: Develop and implement an effective communication plan.
    • Identify the individuals and groups that should be in the communication plan.
      • Major groups - faculty, staff, students
      • Administrative departments
    • Plan regular communication of to the various individuals and groups and identify the best communication avenues.
      • Initial memorandum from Provost to all faculty, staff, and students sent in 2007, exact date to be determined.
      • Website established by 01/15/07; use to post basic info, contact info, and team info
  • Technical Issues:
    • Assess ADA accessibility with D2L.
    • Access to testing server for D2L in January 2007
    • Identify resources and contacts for integration with administrative systems and the Library

      • APSU current policy is to archive courses at the end of each semester and remove courses older than 2 years.

    • Determine how to integrate or interface D2L with the libraries' information discovery and access systems.
    • Train all library faculty to develop courses in D2L.
    • Develop D2L library tutorials and post these activities on library website and D2L website.
    • Develop process to create and maintain a Learning Objects Repository in D2L for faculty.
  • Cost for installation, maintenance, and upgrading
    • Determine APSU's total up-front and recurring cost(s)
    • Incorporate D2L into budget process for Distance Education.
  • Assess current D2L Help Desk operations to determine if changes are needed
    • Assess adequacy hours of service.
    • Assess adequacy of personnel.
  • Assess changes at APSU Help Desk needed to accommodate transition.
C.    Identification of Faculty Needs and Issues
  • Develop a process to copy and archive current Blackboard courses
    • Use website/wiki to communicate reassure to faculty that current and previous materials can still be used.
    • Define a timeline and process for faculty access to the student developed content and grades in Blackboard.
  • Develop a process to allow faculty access to D2L practice sites.
  • Maintain Blackboard technical support until Blackboard course sites are no longer available.
  • Distribute D2L conversion timeline ASAP.
  • Distribute updates to timeline in timely manner.
  • Assess ADA accessibility with D2L.
  • Training  (see section below)
D.    Training (schedule for all attendee TBD upon Train the Trainers Session)
  • D2L training
    • Determine actual dates and location for D2L training.
    • Send at least one APSU representative (preferably more, if possible) for both train-the-trainer and administrative training. (1 from each of 6 colleges, plus Bailey, Penney, and Wooden)
    • Repurpose provided training materials for faculty, staff and students, if possible.
  • Determine actual dates and location for TBR-hosted training.
    • Request to have at least one of the TBR sponsored training sessions at APSU, preferably to include faculty but to include, at the minimum, representative from Academic Technology support, system administration and help desk staff.
    • Continue sending new RODP faculty to regular RODP training, i.e., policies and best practices, including ADA accessibility, during this time.
  • APSU D2L Training
    • Customize training materials posted on the TBR transition wiki to which we have been given open access for APSU campus use, include ADA accessibility training for D2L.
    • Develop an exemplary course and template that is available to all faculty members.
    • Use website/wiki for a training D2L site that will serve as a communication tool for trainers. Discuss issues and use the D2L training site as a repository for sharing training materials.
    • Identify APSU D2L trainers. Including faculty/staff to serve as department trainers and then serve as mentors and supplementary trainers for faculty in various academic units. Market them campus-wide as contacts for assistance as needed.
